...While it's clearly pitched at a more mainstream audience, Staff of Kings appears to do a grand job of recreating that irresistible Indy magic. Factor in an entirely separate story-driven, two-player co-op mode – which LucasArts is staying tight-lipped about for the moment – plus the full version of classic point-and-click adventure Fate of Atlantis once you've completed the game, and we're surprisingly optimistic about the game's arrival come June...

... Our demo took us through a section of the ancient temple, and in typical Indy fashion, as soon as he snagged the artifact the place proceeded to fall apart. This first level acts as an introduction to the basics of combat, and it also gives you a chance to meet your new nemesis, Magnus Voller. The story is heavily inspired by Raiders of the Lost Ark, with references throughout the game so fans can look forward to the return of a classic Indiana Jones tale. We didn't get a chance to see this, but we were told that the story unfolds like a graphic novel, so we're curious to seeing how that will fit into the game and what the artwork is like...

... On the DS the player will use the stylus for navigation, puzzle solving, and combat. Additionally, the microphone is used in both single-player and multiplayer cipher labyrinth gameplay. The PSP utilizes Havok in physics-based environmental challenges where the gameplay can be different each time you play it depending on what you do. On the PS2 you'll be able to use the analog stick to bring whipped enemies in close for a little payback. And on the Wii the player will "be" Indiana Jones by utilizing the gesture system of the Wii Remote and Nunchuk...

... We'll cut to the chase: the screens on this page aren't great. As in, 'Donovan insta-ageing into a skeleton at the end of The Last Crusade' not great. The backgrounds are bleached, the character animators have confused Harrison Ford with Danny DeVito and those edges look jaggy as hell. Forget dodging swirling blades, Indy could chop himself in half by brushing against those rough polygons...

... Indy's quest to find the Staff of Kings takes him around the globe, from California to Central America to Istanbul to the frozen cliffs of Nepal and beyond. ... The developers have a clear goal: The new Indy-game shall give the feeling of sitting in the cinema, watching a new movie of the series. Not only the plot is designed to be really movie-like, also the realization of the story will be dealt this way. Therefore the famous film music from John Williams will be heard when the hero cracks his whip and beats up bad guys. But there will also be new tunes that are originally composed for the game. Camera angles, the player’s point of view, special shots during movement – all that is supposed to be as movie-like as possible for not ruining the illusion of a new cinema experience...

... the Euphoria system allows LucasArts to create sequences where everyone reacts convincingly to their environment. Enemies climb aboard the trams realistically, balance precariously and react to the impact of Indy's punches in a convincing fashion, reeling back and instinctively grabbing whatever they can as they fall. The LucasArts rep seemed particularly delighted to show us how winceworthy the impact is when enemies fall to the ground, or get battered by the trams following in pursuit...

...Indiana Jones stands on two pillars of wicked-cool technology. Each lends the game an extreme degree of unpredictability; the first through advanced physics and the other through artificial intelligence. Tech number one, called Euphoria, deals strictly with character behavior and artificial intelligence. It lets NPC characters interact with their environment realistically. Beyond this, it grants them the tools and intelligence necessary to accomplish their own agendas, whether that's helping Indy or trying to kill him....

...This new Indy game is set one year after the events of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, in 1939, as the Nazis are setting out to conquer Europe. Indy must travel the globe, including the streets of San Francisco, unravelling the clues found in ancient artefacts and staying one step ahead (or normally behind) his over-educated enemies - including one enemy from his past (hopefully Mola Ram). Then he must use those clues to piece together a biblical mystery and move to the "world's most sacred ground"...

...Euphoria. Make a mental note, because you’re going to be hearing a lot more of that word over the coming months. One, because for anyone even remotely interested in the world’s greatest adventurer (sorry, Lara), the sight of Dr. Jones on next-gen should be enough to induce - as the dictionary says - “a feeling of great (usually exaggerated) elation”...
