...I suppose the main thing that disappointed most people about this game was the inevitable comparisons to former Indy games. And the films. And other games in general. Compared to those three, Indiana Jones & The Emperor’s Tomb doesn’t really stack up well. The story is fairly interesting it must be said, and I suppose any problems with it are the least of most people’s concerns about the game...

...Indiana Jones fans will find a lot to like in the Emperor's Tomb. While the game's control issues will take you a good hour or so to get comfortable with, the puzzles and combat come together nicely and make for a pretty good action game. Experienced action players may find the game and its puzzles to be a bit on the easy side, but there's definitely some fun to be had here, and Indiana Jones fans will likely appreciate the way their favorite archeologist is represented in the game...

...The latest Indy adventure - and I use the term in its widest, most devalued sense - is a perfect example of how games are devolving. In 1989 the brilliant point 'n' click was released, followed in 1992 by the even better Fate Of Atlantis. They had clever puzzles, bags of charm and captured the spirit of the films perfectly. Seven years later The Infernal Machine tried to emulate the success of Tomb Raider while still acknowledging that Indy is an intelligent archaeology professor who can deal with puzzles as much as physical obstacles. Fast forward to 2003 (or should that be backwards?) and we're presented with an experience so empty, banal and simplistic you can only sink your head into your hands in despair...

...Never in my professional life have I called a game “rollicking good fun” — mainly because I’m unsure what a rollick is or why it would be so much fun. And yet, assigning that old-timey distinction to this action/adventure is appropriate. Like the movies, it’s a throwback to a simpler time — the early-to-mid ’90s — when all we asked for in a game was non-stop action, an elevated platform, and a whip to swing ’er by....

...the combat is possibly the area you'll enjoy most in The Emperor's Tomb. Indy loves a good punch-up, and boy, can this fellow scrap. Using X and A or both, you can deal more pugilistic carnage than an ear-hungry Mike Tyson, delivering a succession of superbly satisfying manoeuvres, from swift one-twos to grab-and-hurl combos, depending on where you enemies are at any given point. But as well as being very handy in unarmed combat, Indy can also make use of just about anything left lying around (Y to pick up), including chairs, liquor bottles, knives, and, of course, a whole selection of guns...

...The first major change that players will notice is that instead of using a reasonably generic face, the new Indiana looks like his real-life portrayer, Harrison Ford. Using the rotating camera will occasionally cause double takes. The face, while not always crisp and clean, does look like Harrison Ford. Throw in the familiar-sounding voice and you have the core essence of any Indiana adventure. And it only gets better...

...our main gripe is that everything is just so familiar, especially with Lara back on the scene right now. Indy's gritty style and bloody-knuckle charm don't help to make the game anything new or innovative, but it does succeed in creating a challenging and exciting experience with all the touches that made the movies so special. If that's what you're after then Indy's your man...

...Despite what the previous IGN editors who've played it have said, I have to disagree with them about the outcome. Perhaps it's because I haven't ever played an Indiana Jones game before (What? How could I?!!!), or it's because I just finished playing the troubled Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness, but my time spent playing Indiana Jones was a pleasurable one. It's a tad too simple at times, there is a laundry list of things to complain about, but in the end, I felt like I was Indy, a smart-ass adventurer getting into trouble all across the world. For me, it was a fresh new experience, and it worked just fine....
